Travel Guide for Tibet
Tibet (Tibet Autonomous Region) which is also known as “The Roof of the World” is situated in the southwest of China bordering the internal provinces of Xinjiang, Qinghai, Sichuan and Yunnan.
It is with an area of 1.23 million sq km, sharing a 3482 km international border with India, Bhutan, Nepal and Burma.
Tibet is the earth’s highest ecosystem and great wildernesses as well as the source of Asia’s some of the greatest rivers such as China's Yangtze River, Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra in India), Machu (Yellow River in China), and Senge Khabab (Indus & Gangas in India), Phungchu (Arun in Nepal).
Tibet Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic of China, is called Xizang Autonomous Region or “Zang” in short, came into effect in September 1965 after the Dalai Lama had fled into exile in India.
At the average altitude of over 4,000 m. (13,100 ft.), this region boasts of many huge mountains like Mt. Nyainqentanglha, Karakoram Mountains, Gangdise and Himalayas. The peculiar landscape gives rise to the cold and dry plateau climate in almost all of Tibet except some regions in the south and east like Nyingchi.
