Mount Kailash Trekking & Tibet Tour 15 Days Third Eye Travel

The ultimate Tibet Trip! Not only does this trip involve an overland scenic drive to Mt. Kailash from Lhasa, it also involves the trekking around Mt. Kailash on foot from west to east before you return to Lhasa.

Your trip begins with an arrival in Chengdu. You will then fly from Chengdu to Lhasa where you will have the sightseeing tours of some of the world famous monuments including the iconic Potala Palace. 

You will continue your journey from Lhasa to Darchen via Shigatse & Saga, then begin your trek around Mt. Kailash. Upon completion of this circuit, you will drive back to Lhasa before returning home or,if you choose, an extension to Nepal.

 
 

Day 01 Arrive in Chengdu (1,740 ft.)

Upon arrival in Chengdu, you will be met and transferred to hotel.

Overnight in Chengdu.

Day 02 Fly Chengdu Lhasa (11,450 ft.)
MEAL: Breakfast

If time permits, you can take an optional tour of Chengdu Panda Breeding Research Center in the morning, which is located just 10 km (6 miles) from the city. These pandas are found only in Sichuan, Shaanxi and Ghansu provinces. Besides the Pandas, black-necked cranes, white storks and other more than 20 species of rare animals are fed and bred in this center throughout the year.

Transfer to airport and fly to Lhasa, the exciting capital of Tibet. You will be met at the airport by your local Tibetan guide and transferred to the hotel. Afternoon is at your leisure for acclimatization & rest or just take a leisurely walk around the Barkhor Bazar, near your hotel.

Day 03 Tour in & around Lhasa

Today will be spent exploring palaces.

First on the list will be the Potala Palace. The palace of the Dalai Lama, a treasure of Tibetan culture, was until 1965, the seat of both religion and politics in Tibet and quite possibly, the singularly most important building in all of Tibet. It was built in the seventh century by Tsongtsen Gampo as a fort and later renovated by the fifth Dalai Lama in the seventeenth century to its present specifications.

The next stop will be Norbulingkha, the winter palace of the Dalai Lama which was built in the eighteenth century.

Day 04 Tour in & around Lhasa.

Today we visit the Drepung monastery. This is the largest monastery in the world and once housed 10,000 monks and nuns. It was built in 1419, and the second, third and fourth Dalai Lamas lived and were entombed here. If we are lucky, we may have a chance to see the monks mixing the butter tea in a washing machine. This happens when there is a special ceremony and large numbers of monks are present.

Our next stop will be the Jokhang Temple. This is the holiest shrine in Tibet and houses a golden statue of the Buddha which was brought to Tibet by the Chinese princess “Wen Chen”. Then we stop off at Barkhor Bazaar outside the Jokhang monastery. This is a bustling flea market and is, generally, the place to buy souvenirs.

Day 05 Drive Lhasa - Gyangtse- Shigatse ( 12,500 ft.)
MEAL: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

An early morning start from Lhasa and a 259 km drive will get us to Gyantse via two passes Khamba La (15,750 ft.) and Karo La (16,270 ft.). En route enjoy the spectacular views of Yamdrok Tso (“Turquoise Lake”), Karo La Glacier and Nyching Kangsang Snow Peak (22,100 ft.).

Arrive in Gyangtse (13,000 ft.) and sightseeing tour of Pelkhor Chode (Kumbum), known as 'monastery with praying wheel’

The short drive of 95 km takes us to Shigatse at an elevation of (12,500 ft), which is the second largest city in Tibet and the capital of the province of Tsang.

Day 06 Drive Shigatse - Saga (15,091 ft.)
MEAL: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

Drive to Lhatze and continue to Saga.

Day 07 Drive Saga - Mansarovar (15,416 ft.)
MEAL: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

From Saga you will head west along the left bank of Matsend Tsangpo river through the villages of Shue and then to Paryang. 

Continue the drive towards west to Samsang and then to Mayum La (16,900 ft) before  going down to the holy lake of Mansarovar.

Day 08 Explore Mansarovar Lake
MEAL: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

Rest day or explore around the beautiful lake which Hindus believe, was created by Brahma ( the Hindu creator deity) as a reflection of the depth of his soul. This is a holy lake for both Hindus and Buddhist.

Afternoon drive to Darchen, and prepare for next day's trek to Mt. Kailash,

Day 09 Trek Darchen - Dirphuk ( 16,040 ft.)
MEAL: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

Start trek by heading west as you climb up to a series of prayer flags at 15,514 ft. from where you should have great views of Mt. Kailash. Then head north through Darboche, Shersong, the rebuilt Chukku Gompa and Damding Donkhang and finally arrive at Dirphuk.

Day 10 Trek Dirphuk- Zuktrul Puk Gompa (15,711 ft.)
MEAL: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

Climb through a moraine to a meadow at 17,000 ft. and then past rock cairns to emerge at Dolma La at 18,500 ft. highest point of the trip. From the pass descend via Gauri Kunda to the La Chukkir Valley at 16,890 ft., where you should look out for the foot prints which pilgrims believe belonged to the Buddha. Descend further along a long, gentle path to Zuktrul Puk Gompa. There is a cave in which the saint Milarepa is said to have meditated.

Day 11 Trek Zuktrul Puk Gompa -Darchen - Mansarovar Lake
MEAL: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

Trek along the Zhong Chu river to a bridge, cross it and climb a little before descending to 15,120 ft. from where you will have good views of Mansarovar Lake. A short trek through Mani walls will lead you back to Darchen. Your waiting  vehicle will take you to Mansarovar.

Day 12 Drive to Saga
MEAL: Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

Return to Saga.

Overnight in Saga.

Day 13 Drive Saga - Shigatse

Continue driving back to Shigatse.

Day 14 Drive Shigatse- Lhasa

Morning we'll visit Tashilunpo Monastery which is the seat of the Panchen Lama, the second in spiritual importance only to the Dalai Lama. The monastery was built in 1447 by Gendun Drup and once housed upward of 3400 monks. Of particular interest at Tashilunpo is a nine story gilded statue of Maitreya - the “Future Buddha”.The rulers of this province had dominion over all of Tibet prior to 1642 AD. At Shigatse, we'll visit Tashilunpo Monastery which is the seat of the Panchen Lama who is second in spiritual importance only to the Dalai Lama. The monastery was built in 1447 by Gendun Drup and once housed upward of 3400 monks. Of particular interest at Tashilunpo is a nine story gilded statue of Maitreya - the “Future Buddha”.

Drive to Lhasa and overnight.

Day 15 Lhasa - U.S or an extension

At an appointed time, transfer to airport and fly back to Chengdu and connect your flight to U.S. or  extend your tour to China or Nepal or other destinations in Asia.

    • Are the trip and price guaranteed?
      The trip is guaranteed even with the sign-up of the minimum of two people. The price shown with departure date is also guaranteed once you send us a trip application form with a deposit of $350.00. Otherwise, it may change until we receive the trip applications form.
    • What is internal air?
      There are flights involved in the trip. Internal Air is the flights between one city/place to another during the trip. Since the airfares keep changing, we do not include this in the land cost.
    • Can you arrange my flights from/to U.S.?
      Yes, we can arrange your flights from/to U.S. You just need to email us your full name as appears on the passport and departure city in U.S. We will then send you a quote for the flight. To issue the ticket, we just need your credit card details.
    • How soon do I book the trip?
      The sooner you book, the better it is, because getting lower airfare from U.S. is higher when you book well in advance. Also, it is hard to get seats on some of the internal flight if it is closer to departure date. You can usually make the international flight reservation nine months prior to your departure date.
    • Do I need visa, permit & entrance fees?
      Yes, you need a visa for China which you must obtain before you leave U.S. In additional to Chinese visa, you also need a Tibet Travel Permit, which we will get that for you. You can get the Nepal visa upon arrival at China-Nepal border or airport in Kathmandu. We will also take care of your Bhutan visa. All the permits and entrance fees are included in the tour.
    • What about the weather?
      Summer and early fall are the best time to travel to Mt. Kailash. The weather generally stays nice and sunny, and the the chance of rain is very low during spring and fall. Though it may be chilly at night during the circuit Mt. Kailash, the views are usually pretty good during the time.
    • When do I need to pay?
      At the time of booking, you need to send us $ 350.00 deposit with a trip application form. $ 1000 is due 3 months prior to departure, and balance is due 2 months prior to departure. For the internal flight, you may need to pay about 5-6 months as we need to issue the tickets.
    • How big are the groups?
      Our groups are usually small, so you get the personalized services from local guides. There must be minimum of 2 people to run the trip and the maximum is 10 people in the group.
    • Do I need travel insurance & where I purchase it?
      We strongly recommend you to purchase the travel insurance which protects you, in can if you had to cancel the trip or other reasons like flight delay, flight cancellation, and medical evacuation. Once you book the trip, we can send you a Travel Insurance Quote. You can either buy through the link we send you or from your choice of other insurance companies.
    • What about accommodations, meals & upgrade?
      You will be staying in nice, comfortable accommodation with attached bath in the city like Lhasa and Shigatse. Outside the cities, you will be staying in Lodge or Guest House. Your breakfast is always included. Lunch and dinner are included only outside Lhasa. A decent meal in Lhasa will cost you about $ 10-15 in tourist class restaurant.
    • What about guide, drivers and travel during the period?
      We provide experienced driver and English speaking local guide in in Tibet. You will be traveling in comfortable private Car or van or mini bus depending on the number of people in the group.
    • What should I pack?
      We will email you a packing list once you book the trip with us. We will mail you the final information packet 2-3 months prior to departure. You will find the all relevant information including confirmed hotels, local contact details, domestic flight info, and packing list as well.
    • Can I extend my trip?
      Yes, you can extend your trip to Nepal or China or destinations in Asia. You may like to inform this at the time of booking the trip, should you book the international flight with us.
    • Can we make this as a private trip on our own date?
      Yes, we can arrange this trip as a private trip on your own date. However, the price will be higher.
